Tortoise and the Hare Card

We are very proud of the Tortoise and the Hare Card we made for Ariel Investment. Based on Aesop’s famous parable, the card features a festive, silver-embellished pop-up scene showing the tortoise’s triumph over the impetuous hare.

Ariel Investments are a distinguished investment company based in Chicago, USA. From the moment they began, Ariel Investments have been inspired by the parable of the tortoise and the hare. Over the years, they have made it part of their identity. It features on their logo. It is in their motto. Most importantly, the prudence and patience of the tortoise is fundamental to the way they approach investment. When they got in touch with us, Ariel said they wanted us to create a holiday card that showed how important the fable is to them.

When we started designing the Tortoise and the Hare Card, we wanted it to have a similar feel to a book of fables. Accordingly, we based the front of the card on the title pages you see in novels or collections of fairy-tales. As well as introducing the fable, the silver-foiled lettering draws in the reader. Inside the card, there is an intricate, laser-cut scene in three pop-up layers. On the left page of the card, the hare is asleep under a tree. On the right page, there are rolling hills that lead up to the determined tortoise edging closer to the finish line. Also, we decorated the spread with silver snowflakes and cut-out stars. On the back cover of the card, there is space for a hand-written message next to the Ariel Investments logo.

It was certainly a challenge condensing the fable’s narrative into one pop-up scene. However, we were thrilled with the end result. It is true what they say: slow and steady wins the race. So if you would like us to create you a festive card, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
